Surgery along with radiotherapy and drug treatment is an essential corner- stone of modern breast cancer treatment. In recent years, considerable progress has been made not only in the drug therapy used to combat breast cancer, but also in radiotherapy. The development of targeted intraoperative radiotherapy (TARGIT) represents a major step forward on the road to gentler, individualized cancer therapy.
Clinical trials have been done since 1998 thoroughly testing this approach. The results of these studies are expected to be announced soon. If these results are satisfactory, then targeted intraoperative radiotherapy has the potential to become established as a new treatment option which could benefit a large number of patients.
